Thomas A. Buchholz, M.D.
, serves as the Senior Vice President and Medical Director of the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center, a comprehensive and clinically integrated cancer care program in San Diego that opened for patient care in October, 2018.
Following medical school in Boston, and postgraduate specialty training in Seattle, Dr. Buchholz began his career as a cancer physician in the U.S. Air Force, co-developing the first brachytherapy and stereotactic radiation programs for the Department of Defense. Subsequently, he joined the faculty of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where he spent 20 years as an academic physician, researcher, educator, and leader. At MD Anderson he held a number of leadership positions including Division Head and Department Chair of Radiation Oncology, Provost and Executive Vice President, and Executive Vice President and Physician-in-Chief.
Dr. Buchholz is internationally recognized for his significant clinical and academic contributions over the course of his career, which has focused on advancing the fields of radiation oncology and breast cancer treatment. He has published more than 350 peer-reviewed journals and numerous editorials, invited articles and book chapters. He previously served as Editor-in-Chief of a cancer journal and was twice elected to 3-year terms to Co-Chair the National Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Clinical Trials Steering Committee.
In his current leadership role, Dr. Buchholz is responsible for directing all clinical activities and programs at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center, ensuring care delivery is efficient, effective and supports the patient-centered mission of the program. He leads the development of clinical research activities within the program, including collaboration with MD Anderson clinical trials and other industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated trials. In addition, Dr. Buchholz maintains a part-time radiation oncology practice within Scripps MD Anderson that specializes in the treatment of breast cancer. He and his wife Mara are excited to join the San Diego community!
